The Story of Mustafa

Born in Aleppo, Syria, Mustafa spent the first 18 years of his life growing up there. He started university in Syria, but when the Syrian Civil War started, it prevented him from going to university where he could continue to educate himself. He fled Syria with his family and moved to Lebanon to start a new fresh life. While in Lebanon with his family, Mustafa went to university and received his bachelor’s degree in Theology. He then attempted to obtain a master’s degree in Theology, which he could only complete two out of the three years of the course because of the financial-economic state of the country. The crashing of the Lebanese economy forced Mustafa to quit university and find a job to support his wife and daughter. Today, Mustafa lives in the mountains of Lebanon as a groundskeeper, religious leader, and a horticulturist. When talking about his own financial situation, Mustafa stated: “I used to make about 500 dollars a month and expenses were 200 dollars a month, so I saved about 300 dollars every month. Now I make 700 dollars because of a raise I received, however, expenses have risen to 400 dollars. At one point, expenses were even higher than this because my daughter was a newborn, and I had to pay hospital fees. These last few months have been very tough but Thank God my situation hasn’t changed much after the crash of the economy.”
